I Want to Volunteer

We need lots of hands to make Sundays and events happen at Zao. If you want to volunteer to help us either behind the scenes or up front, please fill out the form below. Someone from the leadership team will reach out and connect with you about various ways to be involved.

There might be an area that matches below, but we want to hear from you about your areas of interest. What are your gifts you'd like share? What hobbies do you have? Let us know!

Flexible Connection Volunteer Roles

These areas have a more flexible schedule/commitment. You can do them in your own time or once in a while in service.

If you enjoy praying for and connecting others, this would be a great way to serve and there are many options to choose from based on your comfort level.

1. Pray over others in service, or from home as prayer requests get submitted throughout the week.
2. Offer hugs or a squeeze of the hands during communion.
3. Coordinate volunteers to both pray and connect.

Lots of little tasks add up to make our space welcoming! We need folks each week for most of these, doing one or some tasks.

1. Be a greeter, or oversee and schedule the greeters.
2. During Giving, bring coffee into Living Room.
3. When the last song is happening, go into Living Room to set up for the post-service Coffee Hour.
4. Bring treats for the Coffee Hour, or coordinate who’s bringing treats
5. Arrive at 9am and set up:
- Brew coffee
- Set up Welcome table
- Light Christ candle
- Put out sign by doors
6. Stay a little after and clean up:
- Check pews and put items in lost and found
- Pick up trash and take it out
- Find filled-out contact cards
- Turn lights off
- Shut and lock doors
- Blow out candles and put them away
- Wash mugs and dishes
7. Seasonal decorating

You don't need to be an extrovert to get the word out about Zao.

1. Communications - help put together the newsletter, post on social media (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook)
2. Photography- take pictures at service and events
3. Tabling at festivals - talk to folks about Zao and play games and give out prizes
4. Flyering - when we have flyers to pass out, help canvas the area
5. Transportation to and from service - sometimes folks need a ride. If you have a car and can pick up and drop off so people can get to Zao, it's so helpful!

Helping w/ communion looks like arriving at 9:45am, helping to serve if needed, and putting it away after service.
You could also do one or some of those.

We need people to plan and run the fun!

1. Attend events - we need people there :)
2. Host, or plan, or organize events
3, Reach out to needed people to make event happen
4. Get supplies (food, drinks, etc)
- Help cook if needed
5. Set-up and tear down for events
6. Get the social media event info to the right person/team to share
7. Coordinate and plan outside community events (vigils, social justice, etc)
8. Plan logistics around rentals if needed

1. Weekly cleaning - dusting, vacuuming, take trash out, clean bathrooms
2. Seasonal deep cleaning

1. Plan and attend events
- Communication, recruiting, or outreach
- Strategize about what to focus on
2. Meetings
- Planning and hosting
3. Help with the Supply Depot
- Respond to requests
- Stock the depot with supplies
4. Help with the Trans Clothing Boutique
- Wash clothing donations
- Beautify the space
- Open the boutique when people want to come

Serving During Church

If you're coming on Sundays and want to be more involved in the service, these might be areas you're interested in.

One of our three central values is remaining rooted in the teachings of the Middle Eastern, brown-skinned, refugee Jesus of history. One way we do that is through a reading from the Bible prior to hearing the Sunday message.

This role is best for people who feel comfortable speaking in front of others. Although this role does not require time commitment beyond Sunday morning, readers are encouraged to take some time before Sunday service to reflect on the selected weekly passage and how it speaks to them. This is not a weekly commitment. Participants in this team will be added to a rotation of other Reading Team members.

Many of us have had the experience of going to a new church and feeling lost or alone. One way Zao tries to minimize that experience is through our Welcome Team. Welcome Team members provide a warm, inviting presence at the front table on Sunday mornings, orienting to the physical church space, encouraging name tags, and getting to know folks as they enter church, whether for the first or hundredth time. Participants on this team will be added to a rotation of other Welcome Team members.

At Zao we believe that God speaks through all people, not just our pastors. Testimony is an opportunity for us to receive wisdom and truth from members of our community during our Sunday worship service. If you have a story to share about your faith or life journey that you feel would connect with our community, testimony may be for you! Testimony can also be used for different groups or organizations to share about the work that they are doing in the larger community. Testimony is typically not a regularly recurring time commitment.

MCs are the community’s guide through Sunday worship services and one of the first warm, welcoming people that visitors hear from. Our MCs should have a clear understanding of Zao’s values (Jesus Rooted, Justice Centered, Radically Inclusive) and be able to communicate those things in their own way. MCs are also responsible for making sure people understand the logistics of our space on Sunday mornings and staying after service to talk to new people.

This role is best for people who feel comfortable speaking in front of others. This is not a weekly commitment. Participants in this team will be added to a rotation of other MCs.
New MCs participate in a training session before their first Sunday.

Higher-commitment or specific-skill roles

We *need* people serving in these areas to make Sundays happen. You would not have to do them every week, but in a rotation.

If you like to help with small children, we need folks to do any or all of these:
1. Help in nursery during service (9:30am - end of service)
2. Help w/ pre-service childcare (8:30am - 10am)
3. Watch kids during events as needed

If you like working w/ kids ages 5+:
1. Occasional supervision in the back of the sanctuary
2. VBS or Sunday School coordination/teachers

If any of these sound like you, we need your help! You would be on a rotating schedule, not serving every week. Training can be provided.

- I can run a sound board.
- I’m good at running computer things and want to contribute.
- I have lighting system experience.
- I'm a quick learner and willing to be trained on ProPresenter (streaming program).
- I know how to focus cameras at the right time.

If any of these sound like you, we need your help. These are usually seasonal tasks/projects.

- I’m handy.
- I enjoy gardening, or landscaping, or lawn mowing.
- I can sand the pavement when it's icy.
- I can shovel the sidewalk when it snows.

Thank you so much for your interest in helping Zao run! If you have any questions, email admin@zaomke.org.
